Why I Joined A Camera Club

We don’t learn from our good images; we learn from the ones that can be improved on.
— Jen Rozenbaum

Coming into 2024 I decided to join the Waterford Camera Club for both social interaction and growth as a photographer. There is always something to learn in photography-you can always improve your knowledge and skills, and that is what I love about photography. Secondly, joining the club presents opportunities to photograph subjects I probably wouldn’t photograph otherwise. The club has ‘Photographer of the Year’ (POTY-you know you just laughed) competitions and curated themes throughout the year. I have submitted photographs for themes such as leaves and rust, both of which I would not have done on my own. It’s fun going out with a theme in mind and wandering around looking for suitable subjects. It sharpens your eye as a photographer and teaches you observe your surroundings, living in the moment. It’s good for one's wellness and to get outside your comfort zone. We have shared photographs with the Waterford Writer’s Club which they will use to inspire a written piece (that will be published in a book).

Constructive critique is also good for your development, both as a photographer and as a person. It is inspiring to see how others would capture the subject or how they would edit a photo. It keeps you sharp in your photography and editing skills, plus you know others will be critiquing your work so you put your best forward. You need to be able to check your ego at the door. It’s fun to help others, and I have enjoyed tips and help others have provided me.

Wherever you are in your photographic journey or your skill level, consider seeking out and joining your local club.

I submitted this image for the theme ‘Reflections’. It was fun to put this still life together of things which I love to treat myself. I got out on multiple days to shoot reflection photography, looking for reflections in windows, in puddles of water, reflected off other water sources, but in the end, I came up with this photograph, which did well in competition.
